Tchongking 重慶 Chóngqìng
Chongqing (重慶) was never a French colony, but from 1896, after becoming a treaty port, France established a consulate and a small concession area along the Yangtze River. Though modest compared to French holdings in Shanghai or Tianjin, the presence supported trade and diplomatic interests in China’s southwest. It reflected France’s broader semi-colonial involvement in late Qing and early Republican China, amid growing foreign competition in the region.
