Issued on December 3, 1940, this mint never hinged block of four features the red Chekiang provincial surcharge "3" on the 5 cent olive green Dr. Sun Yat-sen definitive, originally printed by Dah Tung Book Co. in gravure. Perforated 14 and bearing the small multiple "YU" watermark (upright), this overprint was part of a regional emergency issue necessitated by currency realignment and limited stamp availability. The design, part of the iconic Sun Yat-sen series, honors the Republic’s founding father and remains a cornerstone of Chinese nationalist imagery. Catalogued as Scott IM448g3, Michel CN-IM 385b, Yvert et Tellier CN 331B, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 581a, and China Stamp Society CN-IM 571, the block is in pristine mint never hinged condition with sharp surcharge impressions and strong centering.
