This 1908 issue from the German Imperial Post Offices in China features a striking black overprint reading "China" and "20 Cents" on a 20 Pfennig carmine stamp depicting the allegorical female figure Germania, crowned and robed. The original stamp, printed in typographic method on watermarked paper with lozenge (diamond) patterns, was issued as part of the German Empire’s definitive series and subsequently overprinted for use in China, where the German postal service operated in treaty ports such as Tientsin (天津), noted here in the readable circular cancel. The design by Paul Eduard Waldraff reflects Imperial iconography and colonial adaptation. The stamp is perforated 14 x 14¼ and measures approximately 22 x 26 mm. Listed under Michel DR-CHI 42, Scott DR-CHI 51, Yvert DR-CHI 43, Stanley Gibbons DR-CHI 50, and AFA 42, it represents both philatelic and geopolitical significance during the waning years of German presence in East Asia.
