Issued between 1905 and 1910 for use in German International Post Offices in China, this typographed definitive pair features the allegorical female figure Germania, adorned with a diadem and royal insignia, symbolizing imperial authority and cultural projection abroad. Designed by Paul Eduard Waldraff and measuring 22 x 26 mm, both stamps are perforated 14 x 14¼ with no watermark on the 20c value and an upright lozenge watermark on the 40c. The 20 Chinese cent denomination is printed in carmine and black and was released on October 1, 1905, while the 40 cent value in dark carmine and black on dull rose paper was issued in 1910. These issues represent the Deutsche Reich's postal and colonial influence during the waning years of the Qing Dynasty and before World War I.
