Issued in March 1904, this typographed stamp from French Indochina features the celebrated “Type Grasset” design, created by Art Nouveau illustrator Eugène Grasset. The design shows a classical allegorical female figure in armor, representing the French Republic, holding a sword and a fasces, with a naval anchor behind her symbolizing colonial maritime strength. Printed in reddish brown on bluish paper, the stamp is perforated 14 x 13½ and measures 20 x 24 mm. Without watermark, it was printed by the Imperial Printing Office in Paris and belongs to the definitive series used throughout French Indochina. The “INDOCHINE FRANÇAISE” inscription clearly marks its regional postal authority. Postmarked and slightly worn, this issue is catalogued as Michel FR-IC 29, Yvert 29, Scott FR-IC 29, and Stanley Gibbons FR-IC 35. A striking piece emblematic of France’s colonial artistic identity in Southeast Asia.
