This 4 centimes stamp, issued in 1903 by the French Post Office in Tchongking, bears the red overprint “TCHONG-KING” along with the denomination in Chinese, applied to the Navigation and Commerce design. Printed in violet brown and blue on grey paper using typography at the Imperial Printing Office in Paris, it was designed by Louis-Eugène Mouchon. The stamp measures 20 by 24 mm and is perforated 14 x 13½. The theme centers on sales, goods, and classical mythology, expressing the symbolism of French imperial commerce in Qing-era China. Catalogued as Scott TCH 3 (Michel FR-IC B19V, Yvert FR-TCH 34, Gibbons FR-TCH 3), this mint hinged example shows gum disturbance and hinge remnants, with an extremely rare instance of the “TCHONG-KING” overprint visibly offset on the reverse—a highly collectible and seldom-seen printing anomaly.
