Issued in November 1892 as part of the iconic "Navigation and Commerce" series for French colonial territories, this 1 centime black on rose stamp was used in the French Settlements in India. Designed by Louis-Eugène Mouchon, the stamp features an allegorical composition of Commerce and Navigation personified by seated figures holding a caduceus and a rudder, flanked by symbols of trade. The overprint "ÉTABLISSEMENTS DE L'INDE" in carmine on the lower tablet identifies its colonial postal jurisdiction. Printed by the Imperial Printing Office in Paris using typographic methods, the issue has a format of 20 x 24 mm and is perforated 14 x 13½. The stamp shown here is unused with hinge remnants, and some toning on the reverse. Despite its modest face value, it reflects the broader iconography and political context of French colonial presence in India during the late 19th century. Estimate "$12 – 18".
