This postal stationery card originally bearing the embossed ½d brown stamp of Queen Victoria has been uprated with an additional 1d red from the same reign, making the total postage 1½d. The card is postmarked with a clear strike from TOKYO B U dated "21 DE 81", suggesting it was processed through the British post office in Japan. It was sent to Kalmar, Sweden, addressed to Mr. F. Gullbrandsson. On the message side, a printed format from "Wm Brown, Castle Street, Salisbury" has been filled in with a handwritten message stating: "Dear Sir, I duly received yr card. Kindly write in English or French. Ich spreche deutsche nicht – Yours truly, Wm Brown." The mixture of languages, the directness of the communication, and the combination of postmarks from both Asia and Europe create a compelling philatelic and cultural snapshot. Condition is very good for a used card of this age, with only light smudging and slight ink transfer. Estimate: "$120 – 160"
