View Full Collection – Japanese Empire Postal History. Japan’s modern postal system was founded in 1871 and quickly expanded alongside the empire. After the war with China in 1895, Japanese postal services were introduced in Taiwan, and from 1910 in annexed Korea. During the occupation of Manchuria in 1931 and later throughout World War II (1941–1945), Japan established post offices and issued overprinted stamps across much of Asia. Printing bureaus such as the Ministry of Finance’s bureau in Tokyo played a key role. Japan’s postal empire significantly influenced Asia’s postal infrastructure, with lasting legacies in several countries.
